| The name you type into your browser address line is called a domain name. These are registered by a centralized internet authority so that each domain name is unique and owned by a company or individual. In order to know what computer systems these names are pointing to, devices exist on the internet called "name servers", this is a short cut name for "Domain Name Server" or "DNS". Each DNS provides a correlation between the domain name and a TCP/IP address, so that when a name resolution request is received by a DNS, it returns the TCP/IP address associated with that name. This TCP/IP address tells the computer where the computer exists on the Internet and is a world wide unique identifier.
