What is SSL and why do I want it?

SSL is an acronym for "Secure Sockets Layer" and refers to a secure communication mechanism used on the Internet used for the purpose of preventing eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery.

SSL certificates are used to uniquely identify and encrypt messages sent between computers. This is necessary for sending personal or private information such as credit card information.

Why do you want an SSL Certificate? If you are planning on using your web site for selling products to your customers, and your customers will be providing credit card information, then you will need an SSL certificate to securely transmit that information over the Internet.
